As you know, if you have been reading my blog for awhile, I have been on a weight loss journey for a few years now.  After 25 pounds lost, I got stuck at the same weight for almost a year.  Then, a month or so ago, I finally broke that plateau and I am happy to report that I finally broke 150!!!

As part of the journey to a healthier me, I have been buying (or acquiring) various tools to help me along my way.  Recent purchases have included exercise clothes and some new videos.  But I have been stuck with the same old scale for the past fifteen years.

It was a very nice, serviceable little scale.  It was still accurate within .5 pounds of the doctor’s office.  But it would only measure to the nearest .5 pound which meant I could go more than a week without seeing any movement sometimes.

A few weeks ago, the folks at Ozeri asked me to review their Weightmaster Digital Bathroom Scale.  I had already reviewed the Ozeri CardioTech Premium Series Blood Pressure Monitor, which I absolutely love (you can see my review here), so I was excited to see what they could do with a scale.

About the Scale:

  • Industry exclusive scale features Microban® antimicrobial product protection that helps prevent the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria.
  • Features the industry’s largest blue-backlit LCD with xBright technology for easy-to-read results from afar.
  • Ultra sturdy scale combines ABS slip-resistant material on the outside with 6mm impact-resistant tempered glass on the inside.
  • Step-on Activation captures the precise weight measurements upon stepping on the scale (no tapping required).
  • Auto-calibrated and automatically turns off to conserve battery life. Runs on 2 AAA batteries with a Low Battery Indicator (batteries included).

My Review:

I have to admit, I wasn’t as thorough as I usually am at the beginning of the review process.  I took the scale out of the box, put in the batteries, threw the instructions to the side (I mean it’s a scale, who needs instructions, right?), set it on a flat surface, and turned it on. I had just weighed on the old scale, which I knew was within a pound of the doctor’s office, so I was pretty confident. But when I stepped on the new scale, it read 5 pounds MORE than the old one!!

I panicked!! I can’t go into a new challenge weighing 5 pounds more just because of a new scale. And how was it possible that it wasn’t even accurate? Or what if it was and the doctor’s office scale was wrong? (You see how quickly my brain goes to crazy emoticon
I moved the scale to the bathroom and tried again. Same reading. I was ready to cry. In desperation I grabbed the instructions to see if I needed to calibrate something. There I read this note:

Your scale will auto-calibrate once before first use and after each time the scale detects it has been picked up or moved. As part of this calibration process, the scale may add its weight to the weight being displayed. Please disregard the first reading, step off the scale and try again.

I went back to the bathroom and stepped back on the scale (without moving it). Lo and behold my weight was within 0.3 pounds of what it read on the old scale. What a relief!!
So the lessons to be learned here are:
1. Always read the instructions
2. Don’t judge yourself by a number on the scale. I was upset one minute and relieved the next but realistically, my weight NEVER changed – just the number on the screen. Do you feel me????

Anyway, so this scale is super accurate, which I love!!  It is the first bath scale to champion Microban® antimicrobial technology that inhibits the growth of odor and stain-causing bacteria. Infused at the point of manufacturing, Microban® antimicrobial protection works for the lifetime of the product to disrupt the growth of bacteria and helps maintain surface cleanliness.  Various members of my family have suffered with athlete’s foot from time to time.  I don’t really want that being spread through the bathroom scale, you know?  So I think this antimicrobial protection is a great feature.  I also like the large backlit screen – I mean I could even read it in the dark if I wanted to!!
