Marvels The Avengers Movie Review – A Must See!!

New York City is under attack by aliens from another dimension.  The government wants to solve the problem by leveling the island of Manhattan with a nuclear blast.  Who will save the day?  Enter Marvel’s The Avengers!!

About the Film:

The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow,  Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The movie, rated PG-13, tells the origins of the group, and how Nick Fury brought together these individual superheroes to form an even more powerful force.

Nick Fury, leader of the peacekeeping group known as S.H.I.E.L.D., along with former Russian spy Black Widow, recruits a super team to combat Thor’s ever-deceptive brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston,  after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner, who can track down the artifact’s gamma signals as long as nobody makes him angry.

My Review:

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see this movie.  And how hard it was to not tell anyone once I had seen it.  That’s because Art and I got to attend our first movie screening with the press passes I got as a Disney Mom Blogger!!  It was so cool to sit in the balcony with other members of the media (I sat next to Ashley Williams from Good Day Sacramento).

But I would have paid full price to see this movie.  I may even pay to see it a second time – it was that good.  As I have mentioned previously, I was a big comic book fan growing up.  One of the things I enjoyed about this movie, though, was that I was not as well-versed in the mythos as I would have been with a Star Trek movie, or an X-Men movie.  This meant that I didn’t get bogged down in the details.  I wasn’t yelling at the screen things like “that didn’t happen!!” or “so-and-so would never do that!!” or as Lord of the Rings fans everywhere lamented, “whatever happened to Tom Bombadil?”

I loved all the characters and think that this is the best movie version of The Hulk so far – although I was not a big fan of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner.  I just didn’t quite believe him as a depressed intellectual.  I loved the 3D but felt that there were parts of the movie where the effect actually detracted from the story – the airships in particular seemed toy-like in 3D and tended to pull me out of the experience and remind me I was sitting in a crowded movie theater instead of a part of the action.  One of my favorite effects was the splatter, be it flying debris or water or what-not, even though computer-generated, that would hit the “camera” at key moments – it really added to the realism and drew me back in.

The Avengers is full of the good old-fashioned comic book violence we remember from our childhoods.  Not a lot of blood, and you may actually laugh when Hulk backhands a villain.  As with any Marvel product, it is rife with the hilarious one-liners Stan Lee is famous for – such bon mots as “No hard feelings, Point Break,” (Iron Man to Thor) and “Clench up, Legolas” (Iron Man to Hawkeye) really help make the movie the gem that it is.

Look for the ubiquitous Stan Lee cameo, and make sure you sit through the credits for the extras that will give you a bit of a laugh and possibly a hint at the future of the franchise.

I give Marvel’s The Avengers, 4 1/2 out of 5 AAAAas!!!  A must-see!!

I received free movie passes to see this movie.  Regardless, all opinions are my own.
