Level Life Low Carb Snacks ReviewA part of my journey to a healthier me, I have been tracking my food.  Not just for calories and fat, but also to make sure I get enough protein and fiber in a day.

Did you know you should be consuming between 10%-35% of your daily calories in protein?  That means a person like me, who eats around 1500 calories a day, should be consuming a minimum of 38 protein grams a day.  In addition, a female under the age of 50 should consume a minimum of 25 grams of fiber per day.

Now, I usually manage to get enough protein in a day, but I don’t think I’ve ever hit that elusive 25 gram mark.  For that reason, I am always on the lookout for high protein and high fiber options that are still tasty.

I was thrilled when the folks at Level Foods asked me to review their collection of low carb snacks.

My Review:

No one in my immediate family is diabetic, but we are bringing the glucose gels to Art’s Uncle Norval, who is.  Glucose gels are 2 times faster than juice and have 50% less calories than soda, so they are perfect for those occasional low blood sugar emergencies.  They come in strawberry banana, vanilla, mandarin orange and green apple flavors.

Bud and I went to town on the bars, shakes and sweet treats.  Each bar has 11-12 grams of protein and each shake has 15 grams of protein.  Both have only about 4 net carbs per serving!!  In addition, all have 6 grams of fiber.

These products are a great supplement to my weight loss program and Bud’s strength training program.  I have a bar for breakfast, with my usual yogurt and take a shake for my afternoon snack.  I find that I am not as draggy at the end of the workday and I’m not reaching for an iced coffee or other sugar and caffeine laden drink to get me through until 5 p.m.  My favorite shake is the strawberry and Bud’s is the vanilla.  They also come in caramel and chocolate flavors.  The caramel chocolatey peanut is our favorite bar and (no surprise) the peanut turtle bars were our favorite sweet snack.  Honestly, though I couldn’t find a flavor I didn’t like.  They were all quite tasty.

Eating Healthy Made Easy With Gorton’s #RealisticResolution

eating healthy made easyAs many of you may know, a few years ago I lost over 30 pounds, thanks in large part to Sparkpeople.com and the friends I met there.  And while I still haven’t met my goal weight, I have kept a stable weight for the past two and a half years.

Heading into the new year, I decided not to make resolutions as I have in the past.  Instead, I decided to commit to one small change.  For me, that change is having 5 small meals a day.  I’ve found if I eat a small meal every three to four hours, not only does it cut down on my heartburn, but I also am having less hunger between meals.
