My Review:

First, let me say that the photos in Cake My Day are simply stunning!!  I could flip through it over and over again just to see all the clever cake ideas the authors present.  In addition, there are really helpful tips on making a good foundation cake, including how to ensure an even surface, how to reduce crumbs, etc.  There are even some cakes that can be made with store-bought pound cake, in case you’re not too confident in your own baking skills.

Many of the cakes throughout the book feature Sweetworks candy.  Sweetworks is recognized worldwide as a leader in premium confections with five premier brands including Sixlets, Celebration by Sweetworks, Niagara Chocolates, Ovation and Oak Leaf.

Inspired by the Polynesian Flower Cake, I decided to try my hand at decorating a beautiful cake.  Here’s my inspiration:

First, I started with the tips on how to dress up a cake mix.  I don’t want to give anything away, so let me just say that it made the fluffiest, yummiest yellow cake I have ever tasted!!

I made my own frosting, as it is much less expensive than canned frosting and so easy to make!!  But the authors have tips on dressing up canned frosting, also.

Next, I wrapped the cake tight and put it in the freezer for 3o minutes.  While the cake was firming up, I started tinting the frosting.  Willow and I had planned to do green frosting, for a “meadow” theme which we would then dot with candy flowers (from Sweetworks, of course).  However, we didn’t have enough green coloring to make the amount of frosting we needed.  So we added in a little bit of aqua.  The color we achieved was gorgeous, but funky.  We had to change our decorating strategy.

I surrounded the bottom of the cake in Shimmer Lime Green and White Sixlets.  Willow freehand sketched the giant flower with a toothpick.  She filled in the center with orange and white Sixlets, then used the Spring Mix Sixlets to line the petals.  Finally we sprinkled on some Pastel Flowers Sweet Shapes to finish the effect.

  12. I would say the pictures. I love to look at them. I can’t seem to make mine turn out like them. the kids love all the candy!

  49. I like the easy and eye-popping designs of the cakes. Sometimes i get overwhelmed when it comes to thinking of ideas for cakes and how easy or hard it would be to create it. This looks very helpful.
