Are You Living the Good Life? #GoodLife

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Allstate for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

With all the difficulties our family has been through over the past four years, I have learned two very important truths:

  1. The support of family, friends and faith is essential in getting through challenging times.
  2. It is important to take care of myself first.

I know the second point may sound a bit selfish to some of my readers, but I read this saying on the safety card of an airline (they all say it) a while back and it resonated with me:

You must first put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

It’s a simple enough rule, but so true.  Did you know you only have about 15 seconds to put on your oxygen mask before you are rendered unconcscious due to cabin depressurization?  So if you want to be helpful to others, it’s always better to put on your own oxygen mask first.

In life, I’ve found it’s much the same. After we lost our business and I became the major source of family income, I gained close to 50 pounds and put myself on autopilot for a couple of years.  There were weekends I just slept away because I was so physically and emotionally exhausted. Once I started eating healthier, losing weight, working out, doing yoga, meditating and blogging, I slept more restfully at night and had more time to take care of the needs of my family.

Today, even though our life is still rough in spots, I am happier than I’ve been in a long time and much more equipped to deal with whatever surprises life might throw my way.  I hope I don’t have to go through anything like this again, but if I do, at least I know how to handle it.  And because of the challenges, I am a better person. It’s a good life 🙂

Allstate is all about celebrating the good life with their new Allstate Good Life program.  Through preparing ourselves, we can be ready for those emergencies our family might encounter along the way.  We don’t let obstacles and risks stand in the way of making a good life for ourselves and our families.
