About the Book:

Araina’s lonely teenage life is forever altered when she witnesses a man with supernatural powers emerge through a rippling wall into the dark and deadly labyrinth she calls home. She is left to solve the mysteries of who he is, why he has special abilities and what is on the other side of the labyrinth wall through which he came.

My Review:

The Labyrinth Wall is part Hunger Games, part The Maze Runner, with just a smidge of Dante’s Inferno thrown in for good measure.  And even though I caught glimpses of all three of these amazing books, The Labyrinth Wall does not feel derivative in any way.

Araina is, in large part, an everyteen.  She is that gangly bundle of angst that all of us embody at some point in our formative years.  Her journey of discovery is our own revelation of feelings, abilities, knowledge, self-awareness and empathy.

The cast of characters Araina meets up with along her journey each embodies a different trait which Araina is trying to manifest in herself.  Darith, her first friend, is recklessness.  Rase, the castle guard, is secrecy.  Korun, the healer, Keelie, the creative, Sol the strong, even Sir Riddles the brutally clever – all make up a part of Araina’s whole.  The more she discovers about each of these, the more she discovers about herself.

The Labyrinth Wall has an immense amount of emotional intelligence, but it is also an exciting adventure story.  I gasped a few times in the story, wondering if all the characters would survive their trials.  I laughed, cheered, talked back – all the things an engaged reader does with a really good story.

There are so many things

we can’t explain,

Yet it is so true.

If we open our eyes, they are so very plain.

I give The Labyrinth Wall five stars.  I LOVED the story and can’t wait to read The Haunted Realm, book two in the Obsidian Series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Moms are difficult to buy for, nicht war?  We say, “Oh, you don’t need to get me anything.”  But of course, we would love to have something, we just don’t want to put that sort of obligation on our kids.

My mom loves my Cheesy Herb Bread, but I’ve given that to her every year for awhile now.  I really wanted to up my game this Christmas.

I was thrilled when NOVICA offered me a $50 gift card in exchange for an honest review of their website.  Mom and I both love NOVICA because of their unique, handmade gifts.

I ordered “Jade Bouquet”, a lacquered wood box from Thailand, as part of my Christmas gift for my mom.  Look how it came right out of the shipping box. The gift wrap is simple, but beautiful.  In addition, there is a little postcard from Thailand – on the back is a hand-written thank you note from the artist.  The little card to the left has a quote from the artist and a description of the box

Jade Bouquet: Thailand’s Nantana Sompamitre designs a floral composition detailed in green for the design of this decorative box. Hand-carved of mango wood, the etched images are underscored by glossy black lacquer.

Here’s a photo of the top of the box:

And  here’s one of the sides:

Isn’t it beautiful?  I am so impressed with the quality and craftsmanship!!  I would highly recommend NOVICA for unique gifts for your loved ones, or even something special for yourself!!

Shhh – here’s the super, super secret part of Mom’s gift:

I mean, I can’t give her an empty box, can I?

I decided to make it a “thank you” box.  I took a roll of adding machine tape and cut twelve strips, each about three inches long.  I wrote something I am thankful for or something I admire about my mom on each strip.

Then I wrapped each little note around a pen until it made a scroll.

Lastly, I tied each little scroll with satin ribbon and placed them in the box:
