About the Book:

The New York Times bestselling authors of Hello, Cupcake! take geniusity to the next level, with bigger, bolder, better creations for every occasion

Those cupcaking geniuses, Karen Tack and Alan Richardson, are back, this time with bigger canvases and bolder creations. Everything that can be done with a cupcake can be done better with a cake—with a twelfth of the effort and loads more wow power, using everyday pans, bowls, and even measuring cups.

Turn a round cake into Swiss cheese and Brie, and it’s April Fool’s! Simply press candy into frosting for an argyle pattern or use one of the easy new decorating techniques to produce wood grain for a guitar cake. Whether you’re a kitchen klutz or a master decorator, you can transform a loaf cake into a retro vacuum cleaner for Mom or bake a cake in a bowl for a rag doll. Need a piñata for a birthday party? Bake the batter in a measuring cup. Or skip the baking altogether, buy a pound cake, and fashion it into a work boot for Dad or a high-top sneaker.

You won’t believe these creations aren’t the real thing—and they’re so stunning you’ll have to make them!

My Review:

First, let me say that the photos in Cake My Day are simply stunning!!  I could flip through it over and over again just to see all the clever cake ideas the authors present.  In addition, there are really helpful tips on making a good foundation cake, including how to ensure an even surface, how to reduce crumbs, etc.  There are even some cakes that can be made with store-bought pound cake, in case you’re not too confident in your own baking skills.

Many of the cakes throughout the book feature Sweetworks candy.  Sweetworks is recognized worldwide as a leader in premium confections with five premier brands including Sixlets, Celebration by Sweetworks, Niagara Chocolates, Ovation and Oak Leaf.

Inspired by the Polynesian Flower Cake, I decided to try my hand at decorating a beautiful cake.  Here’s my inspiration:

cake my day book reviewIsn’t it gorgeous?

First, I started with the tips on how to dress up a cake mix.  I don’t want to give anything away, so let me just say that it made the fluffiest, yummiest yellow cake I have ever tasted!!

I made my own frosting, as it is much less expensive than canned frosting and so easy to make!!  But the authors have tips on dressing up canned frosting, also.

Next, I wrapped the cake tight and put it in the freezer for 3o minutes.  While the cake was firming up, I started tinting the frosting.  Willow and I had planned to do green frosting, for a “meadow” theme which we would then dot with candy flowers (from Sweetworks, of course).  However, we didn’t have enough green coloring to make the amount of frosting we needed.  So we added in a little bit of aqua.  The color we achieved was gorgeous, but funky.  We had to change our decorating strategy.

I surrounded the bottom of the cake in Shimmer Lime Green and White Sixlets.  Willow freehand sketched the giant flower with a toothpick.  She filled in the center with orange and white Sixlets, then used the Spring Mix Sixlets to line the petals.  Finally we sprinkled on some Pastel Flowers Sweet Shapes to finish the effect.

HotelSpa Spectrum 7-Color LED Hand Shower Review

HotelSpa Spectrum 7-Color LED Hand Shower Review

About a month ago, our shower head bit the dust.  Bud tried cleaning it with vinegar, but the water would only come out of about half the holes.  We thought we were having problems with water pressure.  Art switched it out for a low flow shower head, but that seemed to just mist us instead of give a decent shower.

I was thrilled when the people at IP Showers asked me to review their HotelSpa Spectrum 7-Color LED Hand Shower.

About the Product:

According to the company, this is the world’s only chrome-faced, 7-setting, 7-color LED hand shower.   The HotelSpa Spectrum features:

•Powered by running water, no batteries needed
• Luxurious 7-setting High-power LED Hand Shower
• Can be used as Overhead or Handheld shower
• Extra-large 4.25″ Chrome Face
• 7 Settings include Power Rain, Pulsating Massage, Hydrating Mist, Mist/Massage, Rain/Mist and Water-saving Economy Rain & Pause modes
• 3-zone Precision SpiralFlo Dial with Rub-clean Jets & Click-action Lever
• LED light colors change automatically every few seconds softly blending into each other
• LED lights have long life of 100,000 hours (over 10 years of heavy daily use)
• Includes Angle-adjustable Overhead Bracket and Super Flexible Stainless Steel Hose with Dual Conical Brass Hose Nuts for easy hand tightening
• Connects in minutes without Tools
• 1-year Warranty

My Review:

First I was concerned about how sturdy this hand shower would be.  But Art hooked it up in less than 5 minutes and the stainless steel hose and brass hose nuts mean it should last for a long time with no rusting!!

This shower sits at least six inches higher than our old showerhead, which is nice for the taller members of our household (everyone but shrimpy me).  It’s also nice to be able to use it as a handheld shower.  It sure makes cleaning the tub and tile a breeze!!

But, of course, the most fun part of the whole thing is the color-changing LEDs.  Take a look:

Where’s the disco music? Love my #hotelspa shower!
