My One Word for 2014: Self-Confidence #OneWord365

For the second year in a row I am picking my one word for 2014.  This was inspired by my friend Melanie over at Only a Breath, who is again offering a blog button template for those who would like to pick one word to reflect on for the upcoming year.  Melanie, in turn was inspired by Alece at OneWord365.com.  The idea is to come up with your “theme” for the year, or as Alece puts it:

Forget New Year’s Resolutions. Scrap that long list of goals you won’t remember three weeks from now anyway.

Choose just one word.

One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. One word that you can focus on every day, all year long.

It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.

Discover the big impact one word can make.

Here is my one word button which I made, thanks to Melanie’s template:

One Word 2014 self-confidenceWhy did I pick self-confidence? I had named 2011 my “year of no fear“.  2012 was a year of extreme fear, which led me to pick “courage” as my one word for 2013.  I feel that in this past year I have learned to conquer many of my fears and learn how to protect myself and my family from dangerous situations.

Self-confidence seemed like the next logical step, for me.  Self-confidence is defined, according to Merriam-Webster as:

a feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something

I tend to second guess everything I say and do.  I often ask for reassurances from friends and family that I am making the right decision.  And while occasionally asking for confirmation of my own opinion is a good thing, too much of it is debilitating.  It can keep me from making decisions in a timely fashion and miss out on opportunities. Now that I am learning to be courageous, I want to be self-confident as well.

So what about you? What’s your one word for 2014?  Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Hi Teresa! Great idea! I remember during my advertising days, we had something known as “1 word in a brand”. This was suppose to stand for the essence of a consumer brand, what it was, what it is and what it can be to a consumer’s perspective. Yours of course is a lot more personal and I like it. My word for 2014 is .. Believe. I will believe in the goodness of God and man. I will believe that I can be good to my fellowman, not sometimes but most times.

  2. Morning Theresa, I have chosen IGNITE as I picture a fire being lit under my butt, getting me to do almost any of the other words on the list 🙂 Happy New Year !!
