One of our son Bud’s biggest problems for many years has been chronic insomnia (see I Couldn’t Sleep At All Last Night). He slept better for awhile, but then last year, after the move, he went off his sleeping pills and started having problems again.
We knew Bud’s sleep schedule was upside down ( fall asleep at 5 am, wake up at 5 pm), but we thought he was still getting enough sleep. Over the course of a year, though, we saw Bud’s mood continue to deteriorate. With Art gone for long periods of time to Oregon and Boo moving out, there was enough disruption in Bud’s life to explain his moodiness. He’d get better for a day or two, then drop back to anger and black moods.
Around Father’s Day, Bud had an emotional breakdown. As I was talking to him that night, he admitted that he hadn’t been sleeping. He also let me know that his current mattress had a spring which stuck into his back. So, we immediately set out in search of a good, reasonably priced mattress.
Last year I had the opportunity to review Nature’s Sleep memory foam slippers, and after that, Bud was bound and determined to get a Nature’s Sleep mattress. Finally, he found a Groupon that lowered the price considerably, and by the end of June, he was the proud owner of a 8″ Jupiter Memory Foam mattress from Nature’s Sleep.
It was pretty cool, when the mattress arrived, it was in a box the size of a small dorm refrigerator. When we opened it up, the mattress just unfolded itself and started decompressing into its full size. Bud did not go to sleep at all that day he was so excited about cleaning his room and moving out the old bed. That night, he slept like a log, but I wasn’t sure if it was due to his staying up the “night” before.
It has now been a little more than three weeks since Bud got his new bed. He has had a couple of sleepless nights during that time, but overall he seems to be sleeping better every night. I have heard it said that it takes a few weeks for your body to adjust to sleeping on a memory foam mattress, and that seems to be true for Bud as well.
Having three weeks of good sleep means that Bud is not angry anymore. He is helping with chores again, and even making plans for the future. And since his mattress comes with a 20 year warranty, it will be a part of Bud’s future for many years to come.
