I am not a big fan of dryer sheets. They are expensive and the unscented seem to cost even more than the scented ones, which often make wheeze. And don’t even get me started on liquid fabric softener!! I love to line dry, but that can also exacerbate my allergies and the clothes dry stiffly besides.
Along came the good people at Soft by Nature, Inc. with a wonderful little product called Woolzies. Woolzies is a set of six handmade, 100% pure New Zealand wool dryer balls. They soften fabric and lessen static cling without the harsh chemicals or continuing cost. They are also said to reduce drying time by up to 25%. And Woolzies are guaranteed for 1000 loads!!
This is what they look like -just little, round balls of wool. You just throw all six in the dryer along with your load of wet clothes, and the Woolzies go to work. You can hear them knocking around the dryer, but it’s not nearly as loud as drying a pair of sneakers.
I was very happy with the Woolzies. They have almost completely replaced our old dryer sheets. My only complaint is that they love to get “stuck” in the most unusual places, and so we need to carefully comb the laundry after we pull it out of the dryer to make sure we have all six balls. We have found them rolled up in blankets or towels, and stuffed into socks, pants legs and sweater sleeves. But to me, hunting for dryer balls for a minute is a small price to pay to avoid the allergic reactions and excessive costs.
I also appreciate that Woolzies are hypoallergenic – the company says that even if you have a wool allergy they will not bother you, because they do not touch your skin and do not shed.
The best part about Woolzies, to me, is that they are handmade in the Democratic Republic of Nepal, and provide a steady source of income to the desperately needy women of that developing nation.
