How We Met – a 30 Year Love Story

love storyThis is the story of Teressa and Art.  It’s been 30 years in the making, but it’s okay, it’s a love story.

Art and I went to the same high school.  He was a grade ahead of me.  I was in the concert choir and he ran the sound system for our vocal music workshop (80’s version of Glee), but we had never met.

Then, towards the end of the school year, we both wound up on the same bus for choir tour to Canada.  Art says it was love at first sight, when he saw me in this outfit:

When I first saw Art, I wasn’t sure what to make of him.  He was playing a video game on the ferry from Washington to Canada:

We spent a little time together that day, talking about silly stuff and hanging out with our group of friends.  That evening, we got back on the ferry for our return trip.  Art and I walked alone around the outside deck to the front of the boat.  The wind was blowing right across us and in my flimsy pink Members Only jacket, I was freezing.

Art looked at me, concerned and asked, “What’s wrong?”

I hugged myself and said, “I’m cold.”  He put his arm around me and the next thing I knew we were boyfriend and girlfriend.  He told me later that a girl mentioning she was cold was the universal signal for “please put your arm around me.”

Anyway, a few breakups, a marriage, two babies and 30 years later, here we are, (mostly) happily married for 25 years.

What’s your love story?  I’d love it if you would share it in the comments below.

  1. Aw, I love this post- the photos, the story of your beginning! Thank you for sharing!

When I was 18, my brother played D&D with his friends on Sunday. One week they all met at my parents house to play. I met Adam that day, he was wearing a tank top. My friend and I squealed “Naked Shoulders!” I then declared I would probably marry him for his shoulders alone…

He blushed, and apparently found my silly side to be endearing.
Here we are, 15 years later- married with one son.
