At the beginning of 2012 I had some pretty lofty goals – mostly weight loss related. Here they are:
- Run/walk at least 30 minutes 3 days/week.
- Complete a 5k (may be virtual)
- Walk with DH or do cardio video 3 days/week
- Strength training 5-6 days/week
- 5 or more servings of freggies (fruit and veggies) daily
- Increase my professional blog posts to 3 days/week by February 1, 4 days/week by June 1 and 5 days/week by October 1.
- Yoga/meditation 1 day/week
- Complete 4 online Bible studies and work my way up to being a group leader
- Attend church at least once a month
- Night out with friends at least once a month
I’ll be honest. This many goals was way too much and I have been having problems with them. We are walking at least 3 days a week and I am doing strength training at least 5 days a week. I have generally upped my overall freggie intake and completed 3 of the 4 Bible Studies so far that I promised myself for the year. We attended church today after not attending since May and had a night out with friends last night. (I think we’ve been averaging one a month, so that’s good.) And I regularly post 3-4 days a week on my blog.
Two weeks ago, I was watching a Kent Julian video and I was really impressed with the way he breaks out short and longer term goals. The video has since been removed, but you can read about it here.
After watching this video I decided to amend some of my previous resolutions into longer-term (90 day) goals:
- Plan Bud’s 18th birthday
- Help Bud with college enrollment
- Submit health care re-enrollment form (done!!)
- Lose 5 pounds
- Walk 2 day 3-5 days/week
- Work up to 50 crunches
- Work up to 10 pushups
- Finish book synopsis
- Increase subscribers to 200
- Increase monthly pageviews to 3000
- Meditation 3 times/week
- Church once a month
- Complete final Bible study for the year
After completing my longer term goals, every week I set up my short-term goals for the week in my blogging calendar, which I downloaded from Blog Energizer. Here’s a picture of my page for this coming week:
As you can see, this calendar combines my short-term blog calendar with some of my 90 day goals. The health goals and some of the God goals I try to accomplish during my daily one hour of devotion, prayer and exercise.
So far this method of goal setting seems to be working out much better for me. I have been accomplishing much more in a day and not feeling guilty to stop at night and take a break, even if I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted to in a day. Before I feel like I had goals, but no plans to follow through. Kent’s plan helps to incorporate the goals into concrete terms which make them much easier to accomplish.
